Jane’s new year Resolution is to eat healthy and as a result loose weight and she has taken steps to make sure it happens for her. She has made a list of foods to eat and foods to avoid and has even drawn up a menu plan. Alas, 2 days into a new found healthy eating lifestyle she is regularly tired, kind of moody ,has been having this lingering headache that aspirin has not been able to cure and above all been CRAVING SWEETS. After 48 hours of living up to her resolution, she eventually reached for the chocolate bar in her office drawer silently thinking ..’just this once’….and within minutes she FELT better. The above scenario paints a picture of how sugar cravings can mess up even the most determined ‘dieter’
Studies have established a strong link between the level of sugar in your bloodstream and your moods; a sharp decline often cause headaches, inability to concentrate, feeling of tiredness and in extreme cases jitters. Sugar addiction is real and its quite easy to become dependent on refined sugar as it is hidden in many ‘food items’ in our modern day diet…Having watched the video on the process of manufacturing sugar above; I now have valid reasons (aside from it being a weight loss saboteur) to strike it off my family food list forever.
How can something that has gone through such chemical processes with plenty additives my 9 year old cannot pronounce be called food?
I will rather refer to it as a chemical or better still SWEET POISON.
Refined Sugar is devoid of any nutrients and has been stripped of any vitamins or minerals present in the raw material; but rather has the potential of being addictive. Sugar laden foods and drinks (including packaged fruit juices) cause a high Dopamine release in the reward centre of the brain just like most drugs of abuse that makes you feel euphoric once it hits.
As with DRUGS, the only way to be totally free of Sugar dependance is ABSTINENCE because the cravings will make your determination for moderation a failure. This is like advising an Alcoholic to have alcohol in moderation…we all know it won’t work.
The Impact regular consumption of refined sugar has on blood sugar is phenomenal; it predisposes one to being over weight which in the long run can lead to Type 2 Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases. Refined sugar, when ingested, is instantly absorbed and when your diet is very high in added sugar, glucose is moved to the liver in a big lump. When the liver’s reserves of glycogen ( the storage molecule for glucose )are full, it begins a biochemical process to convert it into fat. Obese people usually have a fatty liver.
High Sugar diet is a major factor in tooth decay. Since teeth enamel never repairs itself and we carry our permanent teeth for life; plus the fact that we need it to properly chew food for sustenance, wisdom dictates we protect and care for our teeth.
Struggles with eliminating this chemical from our diet is real BUT CAN BE DONE.
